  2. Treating abnormal cholesterol levels. This means following a healthy lifestyle and potentially taking statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs), especially if you have a heightened risk of stroke. For those with diabetes, doctors recommend both taking statins and keeping blood pressure in check.
  3. Quitting smoking. This can be achieved through counseling and, if needed, medication.
  4. Adopting healthy eating habits. This can involve following diets that have been proven to help, such as the DASH diet (which includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products), a low sodium diet, or a Mediterranean diet.
